Millennials. The popular word that you often hear when there is a discussion about the generation demographic cohort. But, why is everyone is always talking about them? What about the group of people after the Millennials? What about us?

I am born in the year 1998 and this makes me part of Generation Z. Hence, I will enlighten our dear readers on some thoughts of what are the traits of being a Gen Z as well as some nifty tips and tricks on how to manage us better (As we are the ones who will be taking over the world in the near future)!

We are Generation Z. Some people know us as the iGen, but we are commonly known as the generation after the Millennials (post-millennials). We are born from the year 1995 to 2012, and our age ranges between 6 to 23 years old (as of 2018).

What we are like

  • We absolutely love embracing ourselves and our individuality.
  • We are mostly visual creatures with a rather short attention span of only 8 seconds.
  • We love pictures and videos.
  • We like straightforwardness.
  • We’re also pretty well-connected with people on the web, especially through social media. (Instagram and YouTube are our BFFs.)

We are also most likely to be entrepreneurs and have our own start-up or join a start-up. With our overflowing brain and creative juice, we have this inner desire in wanting to make a positive impact. Joining Payboy is an example for me. I was looking at something that can fulfill my desire of making an impact and also a place to let my creativity flow. That’s when I chanced upon Payboy. Payboy is a company that has this desire in wanting to improve and simplifying current HR resources for SMEs and startups, and this makes them embark on the creation of an HR software to help ease this problem. This is in line with what I was looking out for and so, I joined them.

What we don’t like

  • We don’t really like reading texts.
  • We don’t like beating around the bush.

In addition to that, we are extremely sensitive to age discriminations. Especially in a working environment, we strongly feel that it should be more about the contributions and ideas generated, and not about the age of a person. We may be young, but we are very conscious of the fact that we are rookies in the industry. Thus, our will to learn is stronger as we want to be recognised for what we do in our workplace.

In a nutshell, here’s how you can better manage us:

  1. Visual media attracts us more. So, catch our attention by sharing more pictures and videos which we can get the message easily in a straightforward manner.
  2. We want to change the world! We are young, we are starting out small but we can make a difference. Let us be creative in our own ways and do what we want.
  3. Give us a chance! Listen to us! We may be new, but new can also mean having fresher ideas. Take us seriously as we would prefer to be acknowledged for what we have produced.

Overall, what Generation Z wants is to be given a chance to showcase what we have and what we can contribute.

Let me end off with a quote by Brene Brown: “It’s not about ‘What I can accomplish?’ but ‘What do I want to accomplish?”.
